Day 1 - Home Cinema for Designers

Home cinemas are becoming ever more appealing to those looking to improve their home. Creating a home cinema that captivates the cinematic experience is more than installing the right equipment. It is about creating an atmosphere that exceeds the typical cinema experience.

CEDIA’s Home Cinema for Designers course will introduce and explore the formal design skills required to design a dedicated home cinema and media room to its maximum capability.

This course will explain, in detail, the engineering principles involved in high-performance design, the science and calculations required to undertake a complete design exercise for both audio and video, and also associated factors such as data, heat and lighting.

The courses curriculum is based on world standards including the CEDIA / CEA Recommended Practices for audio and video design. Attendees can expect to be challenged, but leave with a firm foundation in the subject. It is ideal preparation for the Home Cinema Design Workshop where the skills taught will be put into practice.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the engineering principles of home cinema design
  • Understanding of the CEA/CEDIA recommended practices for home cinema design
  • Common calculations for audio in home cinema
  • Common calculations for video in home cinema
  • Consideration of other factors (HVAC, lighting, seating, safety etc.)
  • Understanding the science and calculations required

Day 2 - Home Cinema Design Workshop

This course delivers a thorough insight into designing cinemas using standards based engineering calculations. The course teaches the use of world-recognised standards when designing cinema rooms. It dispels myths and removes subjective guesswork.

The day is spent working in groups to design a real-world cinema from a real client brief. Each group is required to deliver a full home cinema design including design calculations, plans, bill of materials and costings. Designs will then be reviewed and validated by the wider group.

By the end of this course delegates will be able to apply proper engineering standards to home cinema design. They will understand the appropriate standards to used and be able to prove their designs with calculation.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding and interpreting client requirements and plan drawings
  • Creating and fine-tuning a design based on client requirements and best practices
  • Proving a design with calculations
  • Making intelligent decisions in difficult rooms
  • Creating standard quotation documents
