An exclusive apartment in the heart of Chelsea has recently undergone a major custom install renovation. CEDIA member and London based installer, West London AV Solutions, was contracted to install an easy and intuitive smart home technology system. With the owners being frequent travelers, it was vital for the system to be reliable, which if left for some weeks would still function correctly once they returned.
West London AV Solutions began the project by designing a system that would integrate the property’s heating, lighting and air conditioning, in addition to managing all AV equipment via various Crestron remotes, iPad’s and iPhone’s.
A full Crestron system provided the perfect solution to this brief. The system consisted of a Crestron DM-MD6X4 6x4 Digital Media™ Distribution Centre with a Crestron CP3 Processor, Crestron DM Receivers, wireless gateways and MTX-3 handheld colour touch screen remotes to control and monitor the whole property whether the homeowner was at home, or away on business. West London AV also specified Crestron’s innovative WPR-48 waterproof remote control in the bathroom to safely manage in-ceiling speakers from Bowers & Wilkins and an AquaVision TV.
The client wanted the technology to be discreet, which meant finding an area that was big enough to house the rack was problematic. To overcome this issue, West London AV Solutions specified a Middle Atlantic DWR Series wall mounted rack which pivoted. As a result, the installer was able to hide the rack within a cupboard, which could be pulled out if access was required.
In the living area, the fireplace posed a number of restrictions for the install of a large format television. The fireplace surround finished high up the wall, meaning a normal TV mounted on the wall would have resulted in a poor viewing angle for people seated on the sofas. This issue was solved with the use of an electrical bracket by Future Automation. Its EAD bracket electrically drops the television down to a suitable position, which in this instance, had to be specially modified to fit the television required.
Also in the lounge, the client requested access to movies, foreign channels and foreign streaming content. With this in mind, West London AV Solutions enabled all foreign entertainment content to be available at the flick of a switch. This was implemented by installing a Russian TV satellite box with Russian TV subscriptions and Kartina streaming boxes. They also installed a Kaleidescape movie player to give the client that authentic home cinema experience. At the same time, a Bowers & Wilkins subwoofer, Triad speaker bar and 75" Samsung UHD TV were installed to create cinematic quality audio-visuals - bringing the big screen atmosphere straight to the owner’s living room. Bowers & Wilkins CCM663 in-ceiling speakers were also installed to minimise the appearance of audio technologies whilst ensuring unprecedented audio quality from any position in the room.
Next on West London AV’s list was achieving full lighting control and management within the apartment. The installer programmed an 8 button SeeTouch Lutron switch with the properties existing Lutron HomeWorks system. This enabled the user to control and change the lighting décor throughout the apartment from a single keypad, allowing them to program personal lighting preferences for specific rooms or occasions. In addition West London AV ensured some buttons were programmed for AC control to make things simpler for the client.
Working around the homeowner’s current AC system, West London AV Solutions added a Coolmaster interface adapter to integrate the air conditioning system with the new Crestron control network via Lutron switches and the properties HomeWorks installation. The same concept was applied to the heating system which was fitted with a North Commander interface.
The client was extremely impressed with the service and quality of West London AV Solutions’ installation. As well as being confident in using all the new technology installed, the owners are able to leave the apartment at the drop of the hat, without fear of the system failing on their return.
