The magnificent Villa del Faro, located at the heel of Italy, is an ultra-modern holiday retreat, complete with home cinema and whole-home audio system, not forgetting outdoor audio for the swimming pool.

This fantastic project is the result of a hi-tech make-over of an original 1970’s dwelling completed by audio-visual integration specialists, Ranieri 1891. The project is designed as a luxury residence for international customers, capable of accommodating up to three families at any one time.

“The architect had come up with a clean-lined design to make the most of the stunning sea views and we were brought in to enhance the opportunities for relaxation and entertainment, using smart home technology,” says Nicola De Benedictis, of Ranieri 1891. “Our challenge was to include all this amazing gadgetry without any of it being on show, and making sure it was easy and intuitive for any of the villa’s occupants to use!”

Powered by three kilometres of cable, all cleverly hidden from view, the Xantech multi-room system boasts a double audio matrix 8x8, 16 keypads, a 4x35 amplifier for the two sun terraces, a 4x100 amplifier for the pool, and RS-232 Docking Station for the central iPod. Handy Xantech keypads and discreet JBL Pro in-wall control panels enable easy use of the technology, without compromising the clean, architectural aesthetics of the Villa.

Occupants are now able to unwind and listen to their own music, wherever they are in the house. Alternatively, the Villa can turn into party central, both indoors and out. The swimming pool area features professionally balanced audio with two subwoofers and four satellite speakers. Meanwhile, a DJ can connect the mixer to the system via a dedicated panel hidden near the pool bar, so the party can start poolside and continue anywhere in the house.

This retro-fit was not without its challenges, however. As the Villa del Fora is perched on top of a hill and facing the sea, weather-proofing the audio system was essential. JBL ‘Control Contractor’ Pro Speakers were chosen for their extreme weather resistance in open architecture.

"During the refurbishment, the architect also discovered an embankment under a sun terrace and asked us to create a cinema room,” continues Nicola, “this space also houses the multi-room audio system rack and, due to its subterranean position, required an efficient air conditioner and dehumidifier, with suction fans located away from the room to avoid any noise.”

Oblivious to the behind-the-scenes technology, the owner and his guests can now enjoy a fantastic cinematic experience here, thanks to the 92’’ frame screen, a Pioneer Kef 9000, a Pioneer AV receiver and Blu-ray Player, and a JBL Pro 7.1 surround system with a Genelec subwoofer.

Using the technology can be said to be child’s play at the Villa del Faro:

“Whilst we were visiting the Villa for our final check, the guests, who had just arrived, noticed that their children had suddenly disappeared. The light from the cinema room led us to their whereabouts. They were already immersed in the Disney/ Pixar film – Wall-E!”
